Lab Diamonds Just Lost Their 4Cs

The GIA has announced a major shift in how it reports on laboratory-grown diamonds. Starting later this year, GIA will no longer issue traditional 4Cs grading reports (cut, colour, clarity, and carat) for lab-grown diamonds. Instead, a new simplified system will be introduced, categorising stones using descriptive terms like “Premium” or “Standard.”

This is a significant move that draws a clearer line between natural and lab-created diamonds — and it’s a change retailers need to understand and prepare for.

GIA to Use New Descriptive Terminology for Laboratory-Grown Diamonds

Why This Matters for Retailers

A diamond’s certificate is often the anchor point for consumer confidence. With the updated GIA reports, lab-grown diamonds will now:

-Be issued as digital-only documents
-Feature broader terms like “Premium” or “Standard” rather than detailed 4C grades
-Include no plotting diagrams or detailed cut grading
-Clearly disclose the diamond’s origin (CVD or HPHT)
-Contain disclaimers clarifying that lab-grown diamonds are man-made

These changes will make GIA’s lab-grown reports visually and structurally different from those issued for natural diamonds — a win for transparency and consumer clarity.

At Searay, we support this evolution. While we supply lab-grown diamonds upon request, and will continue to do so, we’ve not carried them in our core range. Our commitment remains with natural diamonds for their enduring value and significance.

3 Things You Should Do Now

1. Train Your Team

Ensure staff are equipped to explain the new GIA report format and terminology. Customers will have questions — your team should have confident answers.

2. Review How You Merchandise and Market

Audit how lab-grown and natural diamonds are displayed and positioned across your store and online platforms. Clear categorisation is key to avoiding confusion.

3. Check in With Your Suppliers

Talk to your trusted diamond suppliers — like Searay — to understand how these changes may affect product ranges and sourcing. At Searay, we’ve recently launched a new natural diamond collection focused on heirloom design, heritage value, and long-term investment potential — the qualities fine jewellery buyers continue to prioritise.

If you’d like help navigating these changes or reviewing your current diamond strategy, our team is here to support you.
